From Start to Finish: Inspiration to final product

Step 1: Reference Image

I keep a library of reference images on my phone so that when inspiration sparks, I can easily draw a subject. For this piece I was drawn to this image of the beautiful @instagwen_

Step 2: Sketch

You may notice tropical elements in some of my illustrations. I lived in Hawaii last year- right across the street from an ethereal garden full of tropical plants and flowers. I brought my sketchbook to the beach near my house and drew this, and I included the giant sunflowers that were in season at the time. For floral references, I usually use photos I take or my own imagination.

Step 3: Bringing the sketch to life

I love bringing my pencil sketches to life with color. I've recently been experimenting a lot with digital illustration where I scan my sketch in and color it on Photoshop.

Here's a collage of a few of the steps I take when drawing digitally (Btw I had the idea to take screenshots after I had already finished the face, woops!) I'll be posting more in depth progress collages which will include my techniques as well as the tools I use, so stay tuned for that.

I love adding subtle details at the end of the piece. It's these small additions that really make a piece unique in my eyes. When it comes to these details, I try and get creative with it and go with my gut :)
